What I’ve Learned About Plugins

Plugins are useful because they let you add features to WordPress without having to code everything yourself. They can improve a website by adding things like contact forms, social media buttons, security features, and accessibility tools. However, it is important to choose plugins carefully because an unsafe or poorly maintained plugin can cause problems with your website.

Choosing Safe and Trusted Plugins

When looking for plugins, it is important to use trusted sources. The WordPress Plugin Directory is a good place to start because it provides information about plugins, including reviews, ratings, and update history. I should also make sure that a plugin is compatible with my version of WordPress.

Some things I should look for when choosing a plugin include:

  • Reviews and ratings: Check what other users say about the plugin and whether they have reported problems.
  • Recent updates: Look for plugins that are updated regularly. Plugins that have not been updated in a long time may have security or compatibility issues.
  • Active installations: A large number of active installations can be a helpful sign that a plugin is being used, although it does not guarantee that it is safe.
  • Support and documentation: Check whether the developer responds to questions and provides instructions for using the plugin.
  • Permissions and features: Be careful if a plugin asks for access or information that does not seem necessary for its purpose. I should also avoid installing plugins from unknown websites or downloading suspicious files.

Using trusted plugins can help protect my website, keep it running properly, and provide a better experience for visitors.

Other Ways to Find WordPress Plugins

Besides searching the WordPress Plugin Directory, there are other ways to find plugins. I can look at recommendations from WordPress tutorials, web development articles, and trusted technology websites. I can also visit a plugin developer’s official website to learn more about its features and pricing.

Another way to find plugins is to ask instructors or other WordPress users for recommendations. Before installing a plugin, I should still check its reviews, update history, compatibility, and developer information instead of relying only on a recommendation.

Additional Plugin I Selected

For my additional plugin, I selected Broken Link Checker. I chose it because my website, The Thrifty Dish, has blog posts and other content that may include links and images. I wanted a plugin that could help me find broken links before they become a problem for visitors.

I considered other plugins that could improve my website, such as Antispam Bee, which helps fight spam comments, and Contact Form 7, which lets you add contact forms. However, I chose Broken Link Checker because checking links is useful for keeping my website organized and making sure visitors can access the information I share.

Broken Link Checker scans for broken links and images and allows me to review and fix issues from one dashboard. This can help me as the site administrator by making it easier to maintain my website. It can also benefit visitors because they are less likely to click a link that leads to a missing page or image.

Overall, I selected this plugin because it supports the quality and usability of my website. It can help me keep The Thrifty Dish updated and make it easier for readers to find the content they are looking for.
